The major variety utilized in Israel is 'Wonderful' whose origin is in the U.S. Other varieties in Israel are 'Rosh Ha'Pered', which is a sweet variety with pink-white arils, which ripens early. The Agricultural Research Organization (ARO) in Israel is working on the selection of wide range varieties, addressing the issues of yield, resistance to diseases and insects, color, texture, size of arils, soft vs. hard seeds and a broad range of fruit maturity. Several new pomegranate varieties were released in recent years which also ripen early, but unlike 'Rosh Ha'Pered' are characterized by red arils and rind. The major varieties in this group are: 'Acko 128-29 and 'Shani' 130-31. The latter is a registered variety which ripens in August. Both varieties have been commercially implemented. Other varieties also exist at various stages of development and are distinguished by their impressive colors, soft seeds and large size of the arils. Both, early and later ripening varieties will soon be available, which would help in extending the season. |
